A happening is an artistic and theatrical event that began in the 1950s as a precursor to performance art. It typically involved audience participation in gallery installations or planned environments and often included elements like lighting, sounds, and slide projections. Yoko Ono’s Cut Piece, for example, took place in Tokyo in 1964 where she draped herself in fabric and gave the audience scissors, allowing them to slowly cut away pieces of her clothing until she stopped.
Other artists, such as Allan Kaprow, performed happenings in the US. Behind the Iron Curtain, Polish artist Tadeusz Kantor ran the Repassage gallery which promoted happenings and other forms of performance art. In 1993 the artist Jens Galschiot staged political happenings such as My Inner Beast where twenty sculptures were erected within 55 hours without the knowledge of authorities across Europe.
