World news is the jargon used by the media to refer to news from abroad that is not directly related to local or national politics and current events. It is the main branch of journalism that deals with international subjects, and it can be divided into various subfields, including war reporting (although war coverage may also fall under the category of “national” news for the media of belligerent countries themselves).
The bulk of world news stories come from news agencies, whose reporters are stationed abroad and prepare articles to be distributed in bulk via wire services, which originally were provided through telegraphy but today are more often delivered online. Frequently, these reporters are freelancers who produce material for multiple news outlets at once. (In those cases, the reporters are sometimes referred to as stringers.)
While much of the world news is negative, there are many remarkable stories happening around the globe that should not go unnoticed. We’ve gathered some of them here, from environmental comebacks to global efforts that deserve a bigger audience.
